Murata discontinues some products of MLCC and is expected to be out of stock until 2019
2018-12-19

Recently, MLCC leader Murata issued a notice of suspension of production. It is expected that production of products above 0603 size will be discontinued by 2020. The final order is for March 31, 2019. The final shipment date is scheduled for March 31, 2020. The customer will negotiate the date of discontinuation. Before September 28, 2018. Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. is a passive component leader that includes 30% of the global market share. This shutdown notice is the most recent capacity conversion action, and the impact on the Taiwanese MLCC plant is crucial.

Unsustainable purchasing pressure, Japanese passive components factory announced the suspension of the "most lacking" products
As early as March of this year, Murata implemented price increases for MLCC (slice multilayer ceramic capacitors) because of unsustainable customer purchase pressure. In the same month, Murata officially issued an EOL and mentioned that with consumption The demand for electronic products and automotive MLCC has risen, triggering MLCC global supply and demand issues, and the gap between supply and demand will continue to expand. In order to maintain the existing services as much as possible, Murata must shift its production capacity from existing products to market demand, so it is scheduled to stop production. The specifications, Murata will reduce production and limit its supply.

Murata recently announced that it plans to suspend production specifications including 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, etc., and the main force of discontinued production is locked above 0603, and medium and large size specifications such as 0402 104, which is the most lacking product on the market.

In addition to Murata, Japanese major passive component manufacturers have announced that they will suspend some of the “most lacking” products. Another Japanese passive component manufacturer, Kyocera, announced in February that it will discontinue the most defensive and most widely used MLCC products at the end of February; TDK It also gradually fades out the general MLCC.

According to statistics, an ordinary mobile phone needs 300 to 400 MLCCs, and the demand for iPhone 7 is as high as 700. As the demand for mobile phones, automobiles, and communications continues to increase, the global passive component market dominated by MLCC continues to grow. The demand for passive components (capacitors, resistors) in the global industry continues to grow at a high rate, and will increase by 22% from 2017 to 28.6 billion dollars by 2020.

Murata's suspension of production is mainly to convert production capacity to automotive electronics. Whether it is the penetration of new energy vehicles or electronic electronics, the consumption of MLCC is different. The Taiwanese manufacturers themselves are not the MLCC for vehicles. Direct beneficiaries, but the demand for vehicles absorbs Japanese production capacity, and Taiwanese manufacturers successfully receive the mid-market. In addition, the Japanese factory's business strategy is conservative, focusing on long-term strategies; coupled with the shadow of heavy penalties caused by price increases in the past, based on the maintenance of customer relationships, long-term market demand may change and avoid anti-monopoly investigations, etc., is the choice Ning withdraws, does not raise prices."

Taiwan and mainland factories are affected by the transfer effect
As Murata turned to electronic MLCC products for deep-cultivation vehicles, a large number of low- and medium-level MLCC market vacancies will be released in the future. Taiwanese companies such as Guoju, Huaxinke and Heshentang, and mainland manufacturers such as Fenghua Hi-Tech, Yuyang Technology are expected to benefit. Customer transfer order effect.

Passive component products such as MLCC, aluminum electrolytic capacitors, tantalum capacitors, and solid capacitors have been out of stock in the past year. Large-size, high-capacitance and low-capacity MLCC products for notebook computers and smart phones are out of stock. In particular, in addition to the MLCC products required for fast charging power supplies, out-of-stock conditions are expected to continue.

Looking into the future MLCC supply status, industry estimates, the current total MLCC safety stock days of Taiwanese factories, the average has been less than 30 days, some MLCC out of stock status may continue until the end of this year.

Observing the global MLCC industry map, major manufacturers include Japan Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., South Korea's major manufacturer SEMCO, Taiwanese manufacturer Guoju, Huaxinke, Japanese manufacturer Taiyo Yuden, KEMET, AVX, TDK, etc.

Market participants pointed out that the delivery of MLCC machines and equipment is now deferred to 8 months to 12 months, which also makes the standard MLCC capacity expansion equipment encounter bottlenecks.

In addition, including major brands such as Apple (Apple) and Samsung (Samsung), as well as domestic mobile phone manufacturers such as Huawei, Vivo and Oppo, have expanded their MLCC passive components; coupled with fast charging, high quality is required. The capacitor technology has a high demand for MLCC products. In addition, the amount of automotive electronic MLCC continues to increase, and the overall demand for MLCC is in short supply.
